BBR: Who would you say are your greatest musical influences?


QUAZAR: BOOTSY COLLINS, SLY STONE, GAMBLE & HUFF, GEORGE CLINTON, CAMEO, QUINCY JONES, DONNY HATHAWAY, PETE ROCK, MINT CONDITION, STEVIE WONDER, HOLLAND-DOZIER-HOLLAND, WES MONTGOMERY, THELONIUS MONK, PRINCE, LARGE PROFESSOR, ETC…..I GET INFLUENCED FROM ALL OVER THE PLACE

BBR: If you don’t mind me asking what does your production set up consist of?


QUAZAR: A LAPTOP…WIRELESS KEYBOARD, MOUSE, AND HEADPHONES…EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE WITH A MASSIVE, MASSIVE LIBRARY OF SONGS AND SOUNDS…A 46″ TV FOR MONITOR…AND Acid Music Studio 8

BBR: The true urban producer will want to know the answer to this question …… Mpc Or maschine?


QUAZAR: I’VE NEVER TOUCH EITHER…MPC LOOKS BETTER…MASCHINE LOOKS LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE, THESE DAYS…MEANING, IT DOES EVERYTHING FOR YOU….NO SKILL….I COME FROM WORKING WITH SP1200s, DMX, LINN DRUM, TR909, ASR10, ETC (been producing since ’82)

BBR: what is the first piece of musical equipment that you saved for, and how did getting that piece change your life?


QUAZAR: DIDN’T SAVE, BUT MY DAD BOUGHT ME A BASS IN 1978….I BOUGHT A MIXER AND ONE TURNTABLE, IN 1980….AND I GUESS THE FIRST THING I ACTUALLY SAVED FOR WAS A TOY…A Synsonic Drum THAT I BOUGHT FROM TOYS R US, IN 1983 OR ’84 (I think)…PARTIES, HOME PRODUCTIONS, AND PERFORMANCE WENT FROM 0 TO 10, OVERNIGHT….I ROCK THAT THING LIKE PEOPLE COULDN’T BELIEVE…I USED TOBTURN IT UP TO FULL SPEED, SO I COULD HIT BEATS WHENEVER I WISHED, LIKE OFF TIME OR EXTRA KIKS IN THE MEASURES AND STUFF LIKE THAT…AND HOOKING IT THRU MY SYSTEM, MADE IT BOOM

BBR: Most producers go through a metamorphosis in their production explain your transition or why you stayed true to what you do?


QUAZAR: I’VE LOVED MUSIC AND SOUNDS, SINCE MY FIRST MEMORY….ALWAYS LISTENED TO AND LOVED THE MUSIC BEHIND THE SINGER AND THE MAIN GROOVE….USED TO ORGANIZE AND PERFORM MOCK, LIPSYNC CONCERTS ON MY GRANDMOTHER’S BACK PORCH, WITH MY COUSINS…USED TO ASK FOR HALF TOYS AND HALF RECORDS FOR XMAS AND GIFT OPPORTUNITIES….TAUGHT MYSELF TO PLAY BASS, BY EAR….TAUGHT MYSELF TO DJ, BY EAR…BECAME VERY POPULAR DJ SINCE ’78 AND ALWAYS REMAINED POPULAR TO THIS DAY, AS PEOPLE ALWAYS CALL ME “Legend” AND ALL THAT…USED TO PRODUCE BY BACK-TO-BACKING RECORDS, JUST LIKE ON STAGE AND IN PARKS…BEGAN LETTING THE ENGINEERS SAMPLE WAHTEVER RECORDS I WANTED AND PUTTING THEM TOGETHER, HOWEVER I SAID…USED TO GET 2 CASSETTE DECKS OR BOXES AND PAUSE-MIX MY REMIXES AND BEATS ….GOT THE SYNSONIC AND WENT FOR BROKE… GOT TIRED OF CARRYING A MILLION CRATES TO THE CLUB, THEN A MILLION CD BOOKS…SO IN 1999, I BOUGHT MY 1st COMPUTER, THEN SEARCHED FOR A PROGRAM, SO I COULD MAKE MASTERMIXES FOR WEEKENDS AT THE CLUB….SOON START FOCUSING MORE ON REMIXING CERTAIN SONGS….THEN IN 2006, I FOUND THIS PRODUCERS WEBSITE BY MY MANZ, ROCWILDER…AND MY MANZ JESSE WEST WAS ON THERE…Rocbattle…SO, IN EFFORTS TO WIN BATTLES AND PROVE TO KIDS THAT I COULD ROCK JUST AS DOPE WITH MY COMPUTER AGAINST THEIR TRITON KEYBOARDS AND MPCs…,I ENDED UP SHARPINING MY SKILLS….AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GET A SERIOUS OR SINGER TO ROCK WITH ME, IN MICHIGAN…I ENDED UP MANIPULATING SOUND AND SHARPENING MY SKILLS EVEN MORE…TO WHERE I CAN PRODUCE STRINGS, KEYS, HORNS, ETC…NOW, I GET BONAFIDE AND FAMOUS MUSICIANS, IN DISBELIEF, ASKING IF I HIRED SESSION MUSICIANS

BBR:Which do you prefer, played beats or sampled beats?


QUAZAR: PLAYED, UNLESS THE SAMPLE IS REALLY CHOPPED AND FLIPPED, LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE

BBR: If you were a rapper who would you want to produce your album?


QUAZAR: AN ALL STAR TEAM…PETE ROCK, EXTRA P, AND PRIMO….BECAUSE OF THE FUNK AND DOPENESS OF THEIR SOUNDS

BBR: Who would be your dream collaboration if you could produce their entire album?


QUAZAR: LALAH HATHAWAY OR KARDINAL OFFISHALL…..THEY BOTH CAN RIP MANY AND ANY STYLE

BBR: If you could tell your younger self advice about the “business” of producing what would you tell yourself?


QUAZAR: BE MORE ASSERTIVE….TAKE ON AND HOLD STERN TO THE “Phuk U, Pay Me” MOTTO…..KEEP EVERY SOUND IN THE VAULT AND ONLY LET IT BE HEARD OCCASIONALLY OR WHEN PAID….MAKING IT MORE SPECIAL AND IN DEMAND
